A Custom Jarrah Playground at Hathaway Reserve, Baldivis
At Hathaway Reserve, a new community park has opened among the retained Jarrah of Baldivis Grove — a place where artwork by others tells its story, and Van Ryt Industries brought the play. We handcrafted the full suite of Jarrah play equipment on site, working alongside LD Total and Emerge Associates for Frasers Property Australia.
A Park That Tells a Story
The reserve sits within a stand of mature trees the design worked hard to keep. The story of this place is told through artwork created by others — a welcome sculpture and a family of companion birds, designed by Noongar artist Rohin Kickett and Matthew McVeigh, and developed with the project's Traditional Owner partner, Gnaala Karla Booja Aboriginal Corporation. Our part was the play — though we were glad to lend a hand installing the bird sculptures, too.
Handcrafted in Jarrah, Steel & Rope
Everything we made for Hathaway Reserve was handcrafted in our O'Connor workshop. The play is built around West Australian Jarrah — naturally durable Class 1 hardwood — but it's more than timber. Stainless steel framing, climbing ropes and cushioned rubber platforms run through the build, and the Sand Play Combo 'A' pairs Jarrah with hard-wearing stainless steel tables. At its centre is a custom rope climbing tower with a giant tube slide, designed and built for this site. Around it sits a full suite of play — a Shack, a Pod and a Log Scramble, with swings, balance play and nature play through the space. It's all designed in accordance with AS 4685. Installing among the reserve's retained trees took care, with tight crane access and the canopy kept intact throughout.
